In it he explains the coming wave of game dynamics that are finding ways to engage users in tasks that formerly had no “points” or “achievements” systems. I think its good insight, and concur that we should expect this type of thing to increase rapidly as the next generation of business professionals spent large chunks of childhood “leveling up”

There are now several generations of users who have grown up with video games (and it is certainly true for all coming generations). Elements such as points, quests, leader boards, challenges will seem completely natural to them and provide a higher level of engagement. In fact, Katie Salen who co-authored Rules of Play, a book about game design, is starting a High School in New York where the curriculum and instruction will be organized around quests and other gameplay concepts.Continuations, Apr 2009

In a time where everyone is feeling the affects of the financial markets I have found that being personal can go a long way. Even with something like my own blog – providing a personality can mean the difference between thinking about a blog as a company vs. a person. Marketing.fm actually turned 3 years old this month, and it has been quite a journey.

I was recently reminded that my own blog was “an experiment” and something that is ever changing and evolving. I realized that one of the major reasons I have not been posting as much is that I cannot compete with a longer more complete post found elsewhere, nor could I compete with an exclusive story or break information.

I provide insight into things that happen through my own filter.

That was always the genesis of this blog and what I will be returning back to. Posting has been light, and I have always preached that you should not apologize for that but rather find out what the roadblock has been. I discovered that I was writing for too many different sources and without the personality that once ran through the veins of every post.

This blog has provided a number of different things – podcast, marketing network, advertising opportunities, friends in real life, networking contacts, a job!, insight, a frame of reference, a springboard for my own voice, a platform for others, and an ongoing experiment.

Hosted and developed using yourminis Rolling Stone is the latest publication to start allowing users to embed content on their website, blog, myspace page, or anywhere else they want band information to show up.

The upside of widgets for both parties are the added benefit of up to date information from a valid source and of course tracking information for the company distributing the widget.

I have been bullish on widgets for some time and I think that as companies get smarter about building and tracking them we will see more innovative applications. Right now we are seeing the beginning of what will one day be a more content connected web – something I plan on going into further detail on in a different post.

I can now be found on another micro blogging platform called Plurkhere is my Plurk page. I found out about Plurk this morning via Inquisitr and it has an interesting format. I spent some time reading reactions to the Plurk service and feel basically the same way – except I am looking for a centralized login system to all these services.

I still wish there was a centralized way to login to these new services and bring my social graph with me. I know about OpenID and others, but it just seems silly to import my friends into yet another social network. Even if this system were active, I would want a way to screen and filter the friends I do import so that I do not bombard them with yet another invite to another service. It would be nice to have features like importing friends with a certain friends\followers ratio, activity on the service, last login etc…

Back to Plurk; I think the interface is polished. I like the response system and the ability to choose what you are broadcasting. Although it is usually obvious, choosing your beginning “plurk” makes conversations easier to follow. Conversations also happen inside many “plurks” which can sometimes be very confusing – at least to me.

RSS is here to stay (well, at least Google thinks so as evidenced by the purchase of Feedburner). I’m guessing that Google will do a lot for RSS – the integration of feeds on one’s personal Google homepage has already caused the use of RSS to grow exponentially.

Most importantly, the marketing potential for RSS is tremendous and to date, largely untapped. RSS is the ultimate “PULL” technology for the consumer. Here are some great services that are already available via RSS:

1) Travel: Kayak.com is brilliant. You can design a customizable RSS update based on your travel criteria. For example, I have customizable updates for flight routes that I want to monitor. When tickets from New York to San Juan, PR go below $100, I will be notified (and hopefully soon be on the beach).

2) Career Search: Indeed.com & SimplyHired.com: Each of these career-focused search verticals allow one to customize job feeds. For example, I received updates for all interactive ad sales jobs in New York City. RSS allowed me to monitor the latest opportunities in a highly manageable way. I was able to stay on top of the market extremely well.

3) Customizable Searches: Google Alerts for example allow one to be updated whenever a search term receives new relevant information. In my personal experience, I have found that Google alerts don’t work all that well and it leaves much to be desired.

Some ideas for the future?

Retail: Instead of signing up for annoying email updates from your favorite stores, sign up for RSS updates based only on the information that you want. For example, Banana Republic could offer customers RSS updates for upcoming sales or even updates based on customizsed preferences on a product, price, or seasonal basis. In theory, I could pick and choose exactly what communications that I receive. If a jacket I like goes below $100, I would get pinged. I’d prefer this over an annoying HTML email announcing irrelevant information (such as a women’s sale).

Let us know if you have any other ideas for RSS and how it can help improve information consumption.

Technorati Tags: marketing.fm, rss, google, feedburner, indeed.com, simplyhired.com, blogs, feeds, really simple syndication
