I was travelling last week and needed reliable connectivity while I was away.

It turns out having a Android OS device (in my case a Nexus One) and software from JuneFabrics called PDANet is all you need.

The price is $23.95 and you get a fully featured app and desktop client that works on both Mac and PC (I used both and it works great)

1. Simply download the app to your Android phone
2. Download the software to your computer
3. Tether with either a USB cord or Bluetooth connection

This software does not officially work with an iPhone for obvious reasons, but it could work if you were to jailbreak your device.
