Social Media Cleanup

Last year I posted about Social Media Spring Cleaning in which I explained that every so often you need to clean out your social media accounts.

In an effort to stick with the same question set here they are:
Are you using all your profiles? Everyday? Every Week? Every Month?
Are you gaining the original value from them?
Do you want to have 50+ profiles with your information in them? I feel like this one can’t apply to me anymore since having this many profiles is a large part of my job
and for some new ones this year:
Are the social profiles sustainable, or do they sit dormant?
Do they help you in some way?

This year marks a fundamental shift in how profiles and accounts work as the advent of third party verifications systems mean less accounts. Systems like Facebook Connect, Google Login, and even Twitter now have enough of an audience to reduce the need for creating yet another account on another service.

As I look at the services I use every day, every week, and every month I am trying to determine the ones that add the most value. In a lightweight web world it doesn’t make sense to delete these accounts, but certainly take stock of what you are using and what you are not.

To maintain and organize your accounts many people use browser password trackers, desktop remembering services, but I use a web based service (yes another login – but it connects with all servces) called passpack which allows secure storage. It is also a great way to stay organized and have your data available to you when you need it remotely, as the service is available via any browser.

    I am pretty good about being lightweight. I use Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm daily and Flickr and LinkedIn occasionally. I think those are the “social media” type accounts that I use. But now you've got me scratching my head wondering whether I have any rogue accounts out there. I did just close my GetSatisfaction account last week, but I can't think of any others.

    I clearly fall into a different category – but most people I talk to have a
    number of accounts they do not use anymore, and sadly most people use the
    same loginpassword on EVERY account which is never a good idea.

    @Eric
    I talk to folks about passwords daily (it comes with the job I suppose) and I'm still amazed at how many people reuse the same login/password for every account. I used to think that at least among the web-savvy crowds like designers and online marketers that this was a known no-no. But I was wrong.

    Glad to hear you're an illuminated password man Eric.

    @Spencer
    most of these sits have some sort of public facing profile page. You can probably try Googling your email or favorite username. That should pull up any forgotten-about accounts.

    Hi Tara,

    I have found similar behavior with a very tech/geek crowd (comes with my job I suppose). I have started using the password generators more but the best system is a combo wordPhrase, variation on the URL itself and numbers – almost like and algorithm for each site.

    Thanks for dropping by.
