Alumni Networking

I recently updated my alumni profile (or created one actually) at GW and have been thinking about the idea of alumni networking.

I have been contacted a few times by entrepreneurs via my USV profile that shows this info which always leads to a semi-warm connection vs. a cold call – and I think this helps. I think I have done the same thing knowing someone went to the same college, and I have always gotten alumni help.

To be honest the alumni jobs program when I was at GW was terrible, and everyone knew it. Now I hope it has evolved.

In an effort to be a part of the solution instead of the problem I have signed up for all the Alumni profile news, and offer help to those looking for it. I feel like I know the position many of those students are in, and any help I can provide will be worthwhile. I always caveat my advice sessions with “this info is worth what you are paying for it” (which is always zero just to be clear) but I feel like I can be helpful.

I have been working with a few undergrads and recent grads that have explained the dire circumstances into which they are graduating into and I was reminded of this recently with an email exchange with one such graduate. I think there are many people that could help these folks out but do not, and I never want to be in that category.

As a geek I was also happy to see George Washington University is using Google apps for their email provider.

“To be honest the alumni jobs program when I was at GW was terrible, and everyone knew it. Now I hope it has evolved.” Same with me at Bates. I haven't gotten any help or any real connections through my college experience. Everything that I've gotten has been self created. I mean it's cool if I meet someone from my school…but it didn't have the great alumni network that led me to attend it in the first place.

    Hey Eric,

I think alumni programs around the country (I'm a University of Chicago Alumnus) hurt because they are so school specific. I'm trying to break that down with a new nonprofit labor of love that focuses only on new grad jobs – its user-generated site which I will personally vett. It's not an aggregator because when I look for jobs I absolutely hate the mass job directories that don't filter. For the students you're working with at GW you might want to point them to my site jobsphere.org.

Because the site is labor of love, it will always be ad free. The design is currently getting a workover so please don't mind the site for now. there already about 50+ jobs. Anyway let me know what you think :)

    Best,
    Jesse

I'm trying to break that down with a new informal nonprofit website that focuses only on new grad jobs and helping them get hired – its user-generated site where each job is personally vetted for relevancy. It's not an aggregator because when I look for jobs I absolutely hate the mass job directories that don't filter or have dead end links/openings. For the students you're working with at GW you might want to point them to my site http://www.jobsphere.org.

Because the site is labor of love, it will always be ad free and as more users join and ask questions I plan to reach out to career advisers to help pro bono. The design is currently getting a workover so please don't mind the site's layout for now. there already about 50+ jobs. Anyway let me know what you think :)

    Eric,

Have a look at http://myalumLINK.com. It is a product we put out strictly for using your alumni connections to network effectively. The focus is on communication, finding jobs, finding a mentor or someone to mentor, etc. The alumni connection is greatest when there is another connection within the school (athletics or greek organizations) and this is the power of alumLINK.

Just thought I would throw this out there since it is quite new and more and more people are looking to take advantage of their alumni connections but not sure how to.
