When you can’t get a commercial tenant for your street level space it makes sense to get some revenue and it seems more empty stores are turning to out of home advertising. My friend Dave recently shared a NYTimes article documenting many storefronts that are renting out their windows for ads. Since the NYTimes requires registration to view this article I included a picture of the new Intel campaign which recently launched that happens to be across the street from my office

What do you think?
As more stores are closing around Manhattan I see this trend continuing. I have also seen structures go up around older buildings so that landlords can show a facade of what could be there if some construction happened. I am not sure if I mind these ads yet, but it seems like some of Time Square creeping into other areas of the city – something I am definitely against.
