When the cloud fails – Xdrive.com shutdown reminder

December 13, 2008

Marketing

If a service fails in the cloud that no one is on, does it use any bandwidth?

This is certainly old news but I just received the latest update on my XDrive account from AOL letting me know that the service will be shut down January 12, 2009 and all my files will be deleted.

Please go to the Xdrive site at www.xdrive.com to download your files as soon as possible. On the Xdrive site you will find more information, step-by-step instructions and answers to questions about downloading and archiving your files. Remember, it is important that you take action before Jan. 12, 2009. As of that date, the Xdrive service will be closed and any remaining files will be permanently deleted.

Services “in the cloud” come in and out of favor, you just have to pick a provider you hope will not go out of business or close things down after an acquisition like JotSpot did.

Agreed that the SPF should be small. In my mind – cloud deployment in two
places defeats the idea of the “cloud” in the first place. I see your
point, but then the true definition of cloud should really be “sky” and then
deploy across multiple clouds that live in the sky – and hope “your” cloud
doesn't go away, always knowing there is another cloud to hop to.

The ironic thing about clouds is that, while a centerpiece of their value proposition is high-availability without any intervention from you, sometimes they do have problems. Xdrive closing is one example. The AWS outage earlier this year is another.
So then, as a cloud user, you might consider deploying on two clouds – just in case. Then you would need a mechanism to switch over when something fails. And there we are, back to square one, managing your own high-availability.
You might turn to a 3rd party service that allows rapid deployment and failover between a number of clouds. But then of course that 3rd party service becomes your single point of failure. So at the end of the day, there will ALWAYS be a single point of failure.
Not that I don't love the concept of clouds. The idea is just to make that SPF as small and remote as possible…

It sucks that the Xdrive service is ending. I used the elephantdrive transfer tool to move away – they made it so all I had to do was input my old xdrive username/password and it moved everything over to my new elephantdrive account. It took a couple of days, but it was relatively painless. Hope they fare better than Xdrive…

    Nice tip.

The limited individual file size limit makes me not use any of these services.

I would love that. Mozy is $5 a month so it may be a steep conversion
drop-off, but at least another option would be nice. Thankfully I never put
anything worthwhile in the XDrive cloud and I am letting it all be deleted.
I guess those 1's and 0's really will NOT exist forever.

I am surpised AOL has not “sold” its customers and their assets to another company providing a similar service. I wonder if receiving an email saying XDrive is closing, but you can now get your files at Mozy would be a better proposition for former customers.

    The Twelve days of Xdrive…

$86,609 that's this year's cost for the twelve days of Xmas, according to the annual 'Christmas Price Index' compiled by PNC Wealth Management, which tallies the single partridge in a pear tree to the 12 drummers drumming, purchased repeatedly as the song suggests. The price is up $8,508 or 10.9 percent, from $78,100 last year.

The Xdrive service will be shutting down on January 12 2009. What will the last twelve days of Xdrive cost you? Get your music, your pictures, your documents. I would not recommend waiting until the last day. Get it done today…!

I recommend choosing ElephantDrive and to make transferring those digital assets over as easy as possible just click the link http://www.elephantdrive.com/m/ct.aspx?ici=267 …this is the Xdrive to ElephantDrive migration page.

ElephantDrive is the only solution provider working in cooperation with Xdrive using their Open Xdrive API. While competitors of ElephantDrive may offer discounts on their subscription plans you'll have to do all the work of transferring your digital assets. ElephantDrive is committed to helping every Xdrive account holder make transitioning their digital assets seamless and transparent by using the Xdrive to ElephantDrive migration page.

ElephantDrive offers packages that are designed to protect the digital assets of individuals, SMBs, and large organizations.

Xdrive consumers with questions about transferring their digital assets over to ElephantDrive can check our Common Questions page.
