Explaining things is tough

I wanted to link to a great article I read today detailing how difficult it can be to tell someone something. Sometimes no matter how much you explain something the final result is much easier to understand. I know first hand that a phone conversation about an idea can torpedo the real information because there is nothing in front of everyone to reference.

The main reason I look to demo something or get my hands on something tangible is to avoid any confusion. Sometimes the best way to communicate with someone is to get yourselves out of the way and jump into meat – most cases a demo or live site.

And to finish off the article…

One final point: I expect none of you to really get what I’m talking about here, because this principle also applies to itself. But I fully expect I’ll get the occasional email saying “Oh! so that’s what you meant.” or “Why didn’t you tell me that?” I did, but you can’t tell people anything.

ha!

I remember Project Xanadu and the man who invented hypertext and I forget his name. Company was in Sausalito CA and he was related to famous actress. He believed in hypertext and people didnt get it. He never made a fortune with it and then it was gradually adopted for the new techology cause it worked as he said.. Ok I found it in wikipedia
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertext
    Ted Nelson – Xanadu
It was in Notecards from PARC and ZOG at CM
Then Tim Berners-Lee did early hypertext DB and there was HyperCard from Apple.
Ted got investment from Autodesk and no product
Lynx was first web browser with hypertext links
Ted Nelson voice was never silent despite the public and he was seen as a zealot of no substance and really he was the source of my writing this and Erics Marketing.fm and all of it that we know and love….
