Facebook Purgatory

When you request friendship with someone on Facebook you are assume you will be accepted or ignored after a certain point. The state in which you exist while not yet accepted and also not yet ignored is known as Facebook Purgatory. (update: yes, this is already a coined phrase see urban dictionary)

Facebook Purgatory is a place that was recently described by one of my friends as a strange area you are in when someone does not accept your “Friend Request” nor do they “Ignore” it.

There are some great definitions around the web of this “state” and the reasons why someone would keep you in it. My favorite recent example (which shall remain anonymous) is that one of my friends was “let out” of facebook purgatory by another friend who kept them in there for years – literally years. This means that every time they went into their friend request area this person sat – in Facebook purgatory – waiting to be accepted or rejected. I am not sure why…but I find this highly amusing.

Any other terms or phrases that have come out of social networking sites recently?

I am not sure. I will ask the folks involved – I think for the person it
might, but why would either person sit through that for more than a month or
    so? Cracks me up…

i have about 50 people in facebook purgatory.
The list spans people from high school i dont remember, random dudes with my last name, creepy people i've met in the business world, people i just don't like all that much and people who I have no clue who they are.

I think my favorite part of logging on to facebook is quickly scanning through this list. It amazes me every time.

Sometimes, by ignoring, one hopes they will just go away. Although, I wonder if the brutal honesty route of just ignoring or denying is better? Maybe this is the kind way of letting someone down. Let's see what I decide to do when someone sends me a friend request.
