My Online Photo Storage Usage

I recently began the task of uploading photos to share and backup online. I find my primary upload locations to be Picasa and Facebook for different reasons.

I use Facebook to share photos with friends and share comments with a group and those in the photos.

I use Picasa to upload entire albums, videos, and collections on my computer to back them up and handle large sets.

I recently ran into a space limit on Picasa (1GB) and found myself in a bit of a conundrum. I recognize now the true power of Facebook pictures because there is essentially no limit. For video purposes I plunked down the $20 necessary to purchase 10GB of storage for the next 12 months – hardly a good deal. Considering that Gmail currently is providing 6GB for FREE I was less then happy.

The benefit however is that the Picasa software is truly unsurpassed for a PC. I am sure there are people who can make another referral – but no other software handles pictures AND video as well. My only complaints are on the video side that there is no play, pause buttons and you cannot download someone else’s video collection…but I digress.

I now find myself with combined Google storage capacity of over 20GB and I intend to use it. I feel somehow compelled to keep my photos in one place and continue to upload to one location. I used to be a Flickr Pro user but I actually stopped because it was too hard for others to deal with the service! (of all the reasons to stop being a paying customer I think its funny that peer groups inability to adapt was the reason – oh well)

The growth of this category continues to astound me, but it makes perfect sense. There are millions of digital cameras being sold and as it becomes easier to upload pictures these services will only continue to grow.
