Nearly all of the major television networks now offer access to digital video content via the web or iTunes. There is no doubt that online promotion to tv shows has become an essential ingredient to entertainment marketing. For example, NBC’s ratings for the Office improved significantly with the advent of episodes on iTunes, and clips of the shows at NBC.com. Similarly, ABC.com has experienced tremendous success in providing entire episodes and seasons of its proprties via ABC.com with limited commercials.
What digital opportunities will premium networks like HBO & Showtime provide? Personally, I’d be willing to pay for iTunes downloads of the Sopranos, Entourage & Rome. I would even consider an additional fee to my monthly subscription if it allowed me to watch via broadband. According to PaidContent.org, HBO is offering it’s Addiction documentary free online. Hopefully there will be more to come soon.
