While Marketing.FM continues to monitor the changing landscape of brand marketing and advertising at the macro level, recent technology developments have also revolutionized one’s ability to self-market. Within the last year, there have been many key developments that allow one to network, interact and promote oneself like never before. This post will attempt to outline some of the new and exciting opporunities of Self-Marketing 2.0.
In the past year, networking, job searching and self-promoting capabilities have been infinitely improved thanks to the World Wide Web. Employers can search for the ideal candidate and employees can look for the perfect job more easily than ever before.
While job listings through Monster.com, Hotjobs & Careerbuilder are nothing new, it has become more and more important to optimize your personal SEO. What do I mean by this? Here is an example. Employers search for resumes in databases like Monster. They use key words to find matching candidates. Therefore, it is crucial to have an objective at the top of your resume such as: Experienced Interactive Sales Rep seeking…. In addition to the objective statement, look for job descriptions and use similar terms when describing your own experience. This will improve your positioning dramatically. (Click here for some good resume advice).
Secondly, you should re-post or update your resume in monster or hotjobs once a week to bring it up to the top of the “most recently added list.” This will allow your resume to appear higher in the search results.
In terms of new, useful tools, Indeed.com & SimplyHired.com are perhaps the best addition to looking for new jobs. Both sites are vertical search engines that cover corporate job listings as well as monster. It’s highly inclusive. Perhaps the best feature is the customizable search – you can save your search results and set a daily email update or instant RSS feed for new listings. This is truly amazing.
Finally, I recommend Emurse.com – this is a great place to post your resume online as a reference point. Registration is simple and you can opt to receive an update every time your resume has been viewed or downloaded. It even tells you the IP address of where the view is coming from. You can also embed a link to your resume on your site. Here is an example:

I will discuss Linked-In and networking in my next post…
