Over the next six months, Netflix will allow subscribers to access over 1,000 movie and television show titles via personal computer (press release here). While many have speculated such a move, it is now an official move into the space. Moreover, with the growth in connection speed & bandwidth it is likely that physical dvd’s will be obsolete in 5 to 10 years. Everything on-demand is on the horizon and I this announcement is momentous.
Recently, movie studios and content providers have struggled to find the most profitable means of protecting and distributing digital property. My guess is that this will be an issue for Netflix (hopefully they have a plan for partnerships). This type of service will be far more effective for the content producers if there are one or two online distribution channels versus fragmented channels.
