Here is a great example of that mentality.
Cnn International has launched an entirely new screen format as of February 5th, 2006. I originally got this idea churning in my head from Seth Godin in his post: Small is the new big. Then from the folks over at 37 signals makers of fine products like Basecamp. Both posts show real world examples of how this meme is spreading for the better of software and business thinking everywhere. I think there is much to learn from thinking about things in terms of what we “want” and what we “need” and can be applied outside of your normal 9-5 life too.
CNN International is re-thinking their strategy and coming out with basically a new channel that gives the video room to “breathe” and allows the producers to get the information out faster and in a better way than before.
Some new improvements:
- News ticker will be replaced by complete sentences that explain everything before switching to the next headline.
- Full screen graphics will get a new look
- Text areas only take up the screen real estate that is essential to the text – nothing more
- Logo, colors, and alerts are all being redesigned from the ground up.
Re-thinking your strategie and changing everything does not have to be as scary as it seems if you can look at the proposed changes and say, “Wow, this makes sense. We should have thought of this sooner.”
